171 Cedar Arts Center hosts opening night of its 2023 Mosaic Exhibit
CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) -- The 171 Cedar Arts Center in Corning hosted the opening night of its 2023 Mosaic Exhibit. Mosaic is a juried exhibition of 20 regional artists, who had the opportunity to showcase their talents and meet with community members to talk about their work.
"Each artist has a series of works that they create based upon the theme of their choosing. You can do a certain number of images, and they're all squared size, so I did 16 images," said photographer Chris Walters.
Walters has an array of photos from places overseas as well as locations in and around Corning on display.
"My theme is the blue hour, so I created photos of the blue hour, which is the time between sunset and when it gets dark outside. It's really hard to capture [blue hour] and especially with the weather here and life, you can rush out and try to grab the photo and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It's just such a magical time and it's a unique time for photography. It's something that I think a lot of people just don't experience and so it's about bringing that image to someone else that might not experience it," said Walters.
The Executive Director of 171 Cedar Arts Center said its mission is to help support local artists.
"This is [a] way we can help bring awareness to their work. We can help them earn a little bit of money [and] we have a little bit of money that will come back to the Arts Center," said Executive Director, Kirsty Buchanan.
According to Buchanan, the Mosaic theme alludes to the grouping of artwork each artist made and the different individual tessera in a tile mosaic.
"The complete work is made up of many different parts. The name is kind of an allusion to that one specific type of art, but here in our gallery, we have a wide variety of media. We've got ceramics, textiles, stained glass, painting, oil, acrylic, you name it," said Buchanan.
The Mosaic Exhibit will run from November 3rd until December 15th. The Exhibit is free and open to the public to view on Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
