Broome Co. Sheriff's Office releases photo and statement regarding Cornell student accused of threatening to kill Jewish students

(WENY) -- On Wednesday, November 1st, the Broome County Sheriff's Office released the mugshot of the Cornell University student who was arrested on federal charges in connection to the recent threats made to Jewish students at Cornell. According to Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar, 21-year-old Patrick Dai is currently housed in the county's medical wing under 24 hour supervision.
“Make no mistake – on a personal level, my strong support for the Jewish community, both locally and across our nation, remains unwavering and the entire Broome County Sheriff’s Office stands together against antisemitism, racism and hate in all their forms.”
Sheriff Akshar said the Sheriff's Office has an agreement with the U.S. Marshall's Service to house federal inmates in the Correctional Facility when needed, and that includes Dai. As a result, Dai will remain in the facility at their discretion.
“It is our responsibility to ensure the health and safety of those in our care no matter how heinous their alleged crimes may be. Mr. Dai will be afforded the same treatment and protection under the law as any incarcerated individual in our facility while they await their day in court," said Sheriff Akshar.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Syracuse, Dai was arrested on a federal criminal complaint, accusing him of posting the threats to kill Jewish students.
The messages were posted to the Cornell section of an online forum. Federal officials also accuse Dai of making threats to stab and kill Jewish men, rape and kill Jewish women, and behead Jewish babies.
If found guilty, Dai faces a sentence of up to 5-years in prison, and a fine of up to $250,000.
