Threats made against Cornell's Jewish population
ITHACA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Cornell University is telling students, faculty and staff to avoid 104West, the building that houses the school's Kosher Dining Hall, due to what the school calls threatening statements directed at Jewish Cornellians.
An Instagram post from the Hillel Center for Jewish Community at Cornell, advises people to not go near the building. According to the post, Cornell Police are providing additional security to the building, and that the University Administration is aware of the threats.
According to a statement released Sunday, the University has notified the F.B.I. of a potential hate crime.
"Threats of violence are absolutely intolerable, and we will work to ensure that the person or people who posted them are punished to the full extent of the law," said Martha Pollack, president of Cornell University.
The threatening messages were posted to Cornell's page on a site called GreekRank, where anyone can make an account and start posting. One message on the forum page says, "If I see another Jew on campus... if I see a pig male Jew, I will stab you and slit your throat. If I see another pig female Jew, I will drag you away and [sic] you and throw you off a cliff."
Another message on the site reads, "The only good Israeli, is a dead Israeli."
Cornell’s Coalition for Mutual Liberation, a group made up of various campus groups including Students for Justice in Palestine, Cornell Muslim Life and Black Students United denounced the messages on an Instagram post, saying, "the recent anti-Semitic comments left on a message board has no place on our campus".
New York Governor Kathy Hochul reacted to the comments posted online Sunday night on X saying "The disgusting and hateful posts on a message board about Jewish Cornell students is the latest in a series of concerning incidents on college campuses. While it is unclear if these are credible threats, New York State Police is engaged and we’ll take any steps needed to keep students safe."
This is a developing story, WENY News will update the article when more information becomes available.
