City of Ithaca taking steps to creating unarmed policing unit
ITHACA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Ithaca continues to re-imagine how policing can be done throughout the City. It was announced today that the former Cornell University Police Chief Kathy Zoner will oversee the creation of the city's new Unarmed Response Unit.
In addition to oversight, Zoner will also help design the new role of the deputy city manager for public safety. Mayor Laura Lewis said Zoner possesses both local experience and widespread community respect from her time at Cornell.
“Her expertise coupled with her local network will allow for us to design a new model of public safety for our whole community. We look forward to taking the next step in implementing the plans outlined in Council’s report and providing better service for all who live, work in, and visit the City,” said Lewis in a prepared statement.
Zoner was recognized in special resolutions from Tompkins County and governing bodies in higher education for consistent work in law enforcement, and for creating environments of respect and public safety. Zoner served as the Chief of Cornell University Police from 2009 to 2019, but began work at the university in 1991.
She will also work with key stakeholders to develop job descriptions, policies, procedures, training resources and more. This announcement comes one week after the city and the Ithaca Police Department union announced a new contract.
