New laws to combat human trafficking
ALBANY, NY (WENY)-- A package of new laws recently signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul will expand the state's interagency task force and require transportation hubs such as airports, bus terminals and truck stops to provide information about the state's human trafficking services.
“It’s really important, that as a state we do all that we can to ensure the safety of our communities,” said Sen. Lea Webb (D-52nd Senate District).
The interagency task force currently includes a variety of state agency members from the division of criminal services, and the Department of Health to the Office of Victim Services and the New York State Police.
The expansion will add the Secretary of State.
“We need every hand on deck to help us to combat human trafficking. It is a serious issue,” said Sen. Roxanne Persaud (D-19th Senate District).
Sen. Persaud added it's important to look at the relationship between social media and human trafficking. One of the laws in the legislative package will direct the states interagency task force to do just that.
“Too many kids are disappearing because of the interactions they are having online with their social media accounts and so I think looking at the relationship between the use of social media and human trafficking is a great thing to do,” she said.
Persaud said these new laws are a start to combatting this issue but there is still more work to do.
