Fatal train pedestrian collision in Big Flats
BIG FLATS, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Chemung County Sheriff's Office is investigating a train, pedestrian, fatal collision that happened in the Town of Big Flats, yesterday. Police identified the victim as 29-year-old Timothy Galusha of Hornell.
Yesterday, a little before 4 p.m., deputies were sent to the railroad tracks along County Route 64, behind Simmons Rockwell. Police said the conductor for the Norfolk Southern Railway company reported hitting someone who was walking in an easterly direction on the train tracks.
Police said the train was traveling in a westerly direction and hit Galusha, who was walking on the tracks. The conductor said they sounded the horn and pressed on the brakes, but the individual did not move from the tracks.
Police said it is believed that the Galusha could not hear the train because of the ear buds he was wearing.
The investigation will remain open until the Sheriff's Office has all the information from the Norfolk Southern Railway company.
