Local gun shop weighs in on new New York State ammo law
BATH, N.Y. (WENY) -- Background checks for buying ammunition in New York State went into effect -- last month -- on September 13th. Vivian Woodworth, the Manager of Louie’s Gun shop in Bath, said this new law is causing a delay in business, which is ultimately hurting her bottom-line.
“It's been pretty tough,” she said. “We've had a lot of delays so when people come in, they want to take their ammo with them. A lot of them have to wait a day or two.”
Woodworth said the delays on background checks have been taking a toll on the business.
“This is our busiest time of year,” she said. “We should be packed all day long... it's slowed down, like, over half.”
Considering how close Pennsylvania is to the Southern Tier, some gun owners are skipping the ammo background check in New York State all together. Gun owners, across the state, have reported being wrongly denied. Some people have reported long delayed. Some elected law enforcement officials, across the Empire State, have said the new system is broken.
For Woodworth, she said she traveled to a nearby gun shop in Pennsylvania to find that their parking lot was filled with cars from New York.
"We're literally 20 minutes from a gun shop so we're going to see more of an effect here than they are closer to the cities," she said.
Supporters of the new law have said it will help keep people safe by adding an extra layer of checks. Opponents have said it will do nothing to actually prevent gun crime and the new laws do nothing but infringe upon the rights of law abiding citizens.
"I don't think this is making New York State safer because the people that are getting arrested for doing crimes with guns...them guns and ammo is not legal," she said.
Woodworth said she is praying the Supreme Court puts an emergency stop on the background checks to let gun shops get their bearings. Plaintiffs who filed the lawsuit argued in court paperwork that the law is unconstitutional in part because it misuses the federal background check system beyond its intended purpose.
