WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (WENY) -- It was announced today that NASCAR has pushed the WGI race back almost a month. Some say pushing the race back into September will be positive and extend tourist season.

"I think the economic impact will be as beneficial as it always is," said Mayor Laurie DeNardo.

The Grandstand at WGI sold out for eight years in a row, according to the track. That's 38,000  people coming to Watkins Glen. The town is already a popular summer destination spot for the views, and some people say they think that moving the race back will extend that summer feeling. The Mayor of Watkins Glen thinks it will be an good move.

"Well actually I think it'll be an advantage to us. August is normally a busy month in the village, as is summer, and i think moving the race is phenomenal because we have Grand Prix festival the weekend before, its going to extend that season at the track. September is a great month to have expanded into the fall, and people are really excited about it," said Laurie DeNardo, the mayor of Watkins Glen.

One resident has lived in Watkins Glen for 20 years, and has seen firsthand the impact that NASCAR has in the community.

"I think that this town is always, its getting more popular every year, that's what I do know. It can only add more positive things, with people, and businesses, the business would be happy more with the NASCAR races," said Terri Campbell, a longtime Watkins Glen resident.

With the tourism boom, restaurants and local businesses also see the positive impacts.

"The economic impact to all the businesses is always really important, and having that extension of the timing is perfect. We also move into October with Canadian Thanksgiving, and our town hasn't slowed down yet. We welcome the change," added Mayor DeNardo.

The 2024 NASCAR race at WGI will take place on September 14th and 15th, making it a part of the opening round of the playoffs.
