CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) --  The Days of Incandescence will take place from October 26th to the 28th where community members can travel back to the 19th century. The interactive weekend will have a range of family friendly activities.

The multi-day festivities are inspired by Corning Flint Glass Works’ role in making glass containers for Thomas Edison's incandescent lamps and a young shop boy who some say blew the first glass bubble. The event intertwines the unique local history of Corning along with the spooky fun Halloween brings this time of month.

The Days of Incandescence kicks off during the last farmers market of the season on Oct. 26th. Dave DeGoyler, communications manager with Steuben Explores, says vendors will be in the spirit.

“You'll see vendors dressed in costumes from like the 1880s, because it's kind of that Victorian era that we're trying to replicate. There'll be live music that day from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the park.”

The fun doesn’t stop there as there will also be guided historic walk tours throughout the weekend. The actors will be at the Centerway Square giving tours around Corning. Accompanied with this event is also the "Ghost of Glassmaking Cemetery Tour".

“Folks get to go explore the cemetery, learn about some glass innovators and artists, and then go back to Heritage Village and have some libations there. Friday, there's a Libations Crawl, which was very popular last year,” DeGoyle adds “A lot of people came in costume. There will be ten actors in different locations as characters from Corning's past. You get to go interact with them. You get a tasting vessel. You go to ten different spots to actually taste local craft beer and wine."

That Saturday kids can learn and enjoy local history through the “Story Station” where actors will be set up in 5 different stations from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

“Kids can go and kind of learn a little bit about local history. Kind of make history come to life. They get to collect these little light bulb stickers. And if they get five stickers, they can turn them in for a special prize in Centerway Square.”

No matter the age there’s activities for everyone to participate in that Saturday, one notable event you might want to consider is the “Jack O’ Lantern” contest.

“There's the Days of Incandescent Celebration Saturday in Riverfront Park where there'll be vendors, a juggler, the Headless Horseman will be there. There'll be just a lot of fun. There's a community ‘Jack O’ Lantern’ contest that was again very popular last year.”

Organizers are asking that those interested in submitting a pumpkin should carve their pumpkins, set them up, create a display, and then the competition will begin. Contestants can win a prize and still take their pumpkin home. Visitors can also enjoy a special ghost hunt at Heritage Village. DeGoyle says there are exclusive stops one can enjoy.

“It's three hours long and it's behind the scenes so you get to go to places in the, in the museum complex that you don't normally get to go.”

Pre-registration is required for all attendees. To get tickets you can visit Steuben Explore, and for more information visit the Days of Incandescence website.
