Ithaca Porchfest brings the community together
ITHACA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Ithaca Porchfest kicked off in 2007 and started a nationwide phenomenon. It draws in more performers and crowds year after year and has become a community favorite.
“Its amazing that it started here. And it's nationwide now right, and they do it in other countries and stuff, and it all started here in Ithaca, so it's pretty cool,” said Jen Aronov, an attendee.
There were well over a hundred performances scattered across Ithaca Sunday afternoon. People gathered to listen to all types of music, and one host commented on how special Porchfest is for everyone involved.
“We'll host as long as people want to come, we like the fact that our neighbors host music, that we can walk around and see within a few blocks all types and styles of music, we see friends, and we see people from all over, and we love all that,” said Marc Faris, Porchfest performer and house host.
In addition to music, Porchfest introduced the maker's market this year. Local artists pitched the idea for the market and encouraged other artists to show off their products. There were all types of booths, and it was a welcome addition to the festivities.
“I think this is a great opportunity to connect with everyone that's in the community and tell people that there are very talented people here who want to sell their products,” said Yen Ospina, one of the maker's market coordinators.
People of all ages were walking and biking around the city, and even the little ones enjoyed the day.
“its great! I loved it, I loved the food and the music. And I also loved, I loved coming here to listen to all the music and dance to the first band, and I picked up a dog!” said Pippa and Owen.
Porchfest is an annual event that will resume next summer.
