SOUTHPORT, N.Y. (WENY) -- On Tuesday, September 19th, Demolition crews began tearing down three of the 10 condemned trailers at Cherry Lane Mobile Home Park on Sherman Avenue in the Town of Southport.

Crews tore down condemned units, 28, 36, and 40, beginning around 5:30PM on Tuesday evening. Throughout the morning, crews could be seen removing windows from one of the trailers, and boarding up doors for the trailers set to be demolished. Activity died down in the early afternoon, before the demolition crew arrived in the early evening to begin tearing down the first three units.

Neighbors across the street expressed concern with the demolition process, saying they weren't notified when it would begin, and that debris left behind after crews left for the night could pose a hazard for other residents and neighborhood children, whose school bus stop is across from the mobile home park. Large debris piles could be seen left where the trailers once stood, including one large pile next to the street, blocked by a waste hauler.

An 11th trailer ended up being condemned Tuesday afternoon; around 8:00AM, NYSEG and utility crews were at the park, checking out an occupied mobile home near the park's office. Southport Code Enforcement later arrived to the property, and condemned trailer 21, posting a yellow notice to the trailer's front doors. The trailer was occupied at the time; the residents were relocated to another unoccupied trailer within the park.

The demolition work begins with days left of a 45 day timeline outlined in the license agreement between Cherry Lane Park, LLC, and the town of Southport. The agreement outlined that the park must remove the ten condemned units, which are located throughout the park, including lots 3, 7, 9, 18, 29, 30, 34, 36, 38, and 40. It's currently unclear what will happen with trailer 21, which was condemned Tuesday.

Demolition is expected to continue on Wednesday, September 20. The demolition timeline for the park expires in two days on Thursday, September 21.
