3:00PM UPDATE: The Chemung County Sheriff's Office tells WENY News that Interstate 86 between Exit 54 and Exit 56 in Horseheads will remain closed until further notice. Once the water recedes, the road must be inspected for safety. 

All vehicles have been removed from the area; a detour remains in place between Exits 53 and 56.


2:00PM UPDATE: All traffic has that was backed up in the area has been removed. Interstate 86 is shut down in both directions as water is still covering part of the road.

1:20PM UPDATE: Eastbound traffic passed Exit 54 is now open and traffic is moving for vehicles that had been stopped on the highway due to the flooding. Westbound traffic coming from Elmira is still shut down.


HORSEHEADS, NY (WENY) -- A section of Interstate 86 in Chemung County is currently shut down, after heavy rains moving across the area caused the highway to flood shortly after noon today.

I-86 is partially closed down between Exit 54 and Exit 56, between Horseheads and Elmira. Eastbound traffic headed towards Horseheads being detoured off at Exit 53 in Horseheads.
