Towanda, PA to Host Inaugural Porchfest
TOWANDA, PA (WENY) -- An effort is underway to create a neighborhood of live music throughout Towanda borough in September.
Towanda Porchfest, a live music festival, will take place on Saturday, September 9th, in the front porches and lawns of homes in the town. The idea of Porchfest first began in Ithaca, New York in 2007. Over the years, the Ithaca event grew from 20 bands to almost 200, and the idea of porchfests has taken off, with similar events now being held in towns and cities across the country.
"It's a full volunteer event where all the individuals organizing are volunteers, the musicians are volunteers, putting this together so we can have a town full of music for a full day," explained Towanda Borough Planning Commission Vice-Chair Kevin Doupe, who is also a musician.
Towanda Porchfest is still looking for musicians to fill the available homes throughout town. Prospective performers can sign up by scanning the QR code on the flyer, or by visiting the Towanda Porchfest Facebook page for more information, or filling out the Porchfest Musician Application.
"Towanda, and Bradford County in general, have a very good core pool of musicians, and a lot of people really enjoy that, especially post-pandemic, where we were cooped up for so long, and now to be able to come out and be able to enjoy things, enjoy the community, enjoy each other, and enjoy the culture that our town has. People don't see that, and we need to make sure that this is something that becomes as visible as possible," Doupe said.
Music will be scheduled in a staggered manner, so performers music isn't bleeding over from one porch to another. The event runs from 1PM to 7PM on the 9th, centered around York Avenue in Towanda.
T-Shirts are also being sold, to help support the event. Orders can be placed here.
