FOUND: Nimbus the Emu
PINE CITY, N.Y. (WENY) -- Nimbus the emu went missing on July 31st in Pine City. Today, he is back safe and sound at his enclosure. Nimbus was found at a farm only a few miles from where he escaped. There were a couple of sightings of the emu here and there around town, but one farmer got the surprise of his life when Nimbus showed up on his property.
“Well we got done unloading a load of straw, and I was going to the house to get a drink, and here comes this...bird...I was kind of stunned really,” said Skip Drake, the farmer who caught Nimbus.
Skip said he saw Nimbus on his property one day, but the emu ended up running away. Nimbus returned the next day, and Drake found him in an unlikely place.
“The next morning, I was in the barn, and the cows, they were just slamming the gates. I couldn't figure out what was going on, and [my son] says, t's that bird! It's in the barnyard!” said Drake.
Drake and his kids were able to get Nimbus away from the cows and into a nearby field. They then corralled Nimbus into a cattle trailer.
"I just kind of put my hand right below his head and got his body and grabbed his feet. They're pretty long,” said Drake.
When nimbus's owner, Katie Darrow, heard the news, she was relieved that Nimbus was safe and sound.
“I couldn't believe it, like this seems too good to be true, it kind of felt like I was dreaming. I got going down the road and he fell asleep on my lap and he kind of nuzzled me with his head, and I bawled. I cried the whole way home, and I couldn't believe that he was finally home,” said Darrow.
There was a reward being offered for any information leading to Nimbus’s safe return, and Drake got his reward when Darrow picked Nimbus up from the farm. Nimbus is now doing just fine. He has a new enclosure, and has adjusted right back to life on the farm. He is with his fellow emus and has been enjoying plenty of his favorite snack, spinach.
