Rep. Langworthy lays out migrant crisis concerns during Elmira visit
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Republican Congressman Nick Langworthy was in the Southern Tier on Tuesday, August 15th, and while he was in Elmira he took time to highlight his concerns with the migrant crisis. Along with calling out President Joe Biden for his policy at the border, Langworthy also singled out New York Governor Kathy Hochul.
"This out of control migrant relocation, we have already seen upstate locations used by the Hochul administration, and our counties have called for states of emergency in most counties in the Southern Tier," said Langworthy.
Despite the fact that no migrants or refugees have been brought to the Southern Tier from New York City for housing, Langworthy said the risk of it happening is very real.
"This is important here in the Southern Tier because we have a more inexpensive cost of living here and New York City interests (are) looking to unload the cost of the burden... we don't have the infrastructure to handle it."
If that were to happen, Langworthy said it would place an undue burden on local residents who never asked for refugees to be relocated.
"Because of a crisis that no one in upstate New York Voted for. No one asked for this. This is being thrust upon us. And it's happening just up the road in Rochester and Buffalo, you know this could very well happen here next," said Langworthy.
Along with calling on Gov. Hochul to immediately rescind New York’s status as a sanctuary state, Langworthy pushed for Congress to pass the Secure the Border Act, which he said would provide resources for solving Border Patrol staff shortages, provide new technology to support border operations, and finish building the border wall. Along with his press conference at Elmira City Hall, Langworthy also visited the Food Bank of the Southern Tier to meet with volunteers, took a tour of the Vietnam War Museum in Elmira and met local vets, and stopped by the Steuben County Fair to meet with constituents and meet with local 4H students.
