Wham! Pow! Wow! Wellsboro Comic-Con is back
WELLSBORO, PA (WENY) -- From Saturday, August 12 through the 13th, Comic Con returned to Wellsboro, Pennsylvania for its second year. Activities took place in several downtown areas like The Green, Dean Center of Performing Arts, and The Warehouse Theater. Some events included "Talking Cartoons," "Costume Stroll and Photo Exhibit," and even a scavenger hunt.
“Last year was a ton of fun. We got a lot of people out and a lot of great feedback, just about the great community, how it celebrated the town and arts in a lot of different ways,” shared Maia Mahosky, Event Manager for Wellsboro Comic Con.
Around 100 vendors and guests attended the weekend-long event organized by the Wellsboro Pop's Culture Shoppe. The words captured on the 2023 booklet embodied the meaning of the event, “Classic comic creativity wrapped in rural charm.”
“They can come and see some of the work that these amazing comic book and other writers have created,” shared the Owner of Pop’s Culture Shop Julian Stam. “They can ask for sketches to be made and then we have amazing things like our Viking enclave.”
Charlie Schlatter has worked on the big screen since the 1990s. The actor can be seen in binge-worthy TV series like “Shameless,” or some of his recent cartoon work as Chad in the show “Big Nate." Schlatter was also the former voice of The Honey Nut Cheerio Bee.
“I first, one of the first movies I did was a movie called '18 Again' with George Burns years ago,” Schlatter shared. “I did a series with Dick Van Dyke called 'Diagnosis Murder' for like a hundred years and then, kind of slowly got into cartoon.”
Alex Segura, an author of many comics and novels signed books and met his readers. Segura has written for companies including but not limited to Marvel and D.C. A few of Segura's books include: "Space Identity," "The Black Ghost," and Archie Meets KISS."
Every project Alex completes has a different timeline. The fun and creativity behind being an author, the scripts don’t come together overnight.
“It depends for novels it will take anywhere from three months to a year. For comics, it really depends on the length, but for something the size of a trade, it takes a couple weeks to write a script.”
Schlatter was inspired to begin acting as a young kid. He shared a message for aspiring actors and actresses, don't join this industry only for fame.
“You need to do things that you love in life and you'll be successful,” Schlatter concluded.
Wellsboro Comic Con closed itself out for the 2023 season Sunday night. The team behind the event is already planning guests and events for Comic-Con 2024.
