PINE CITY, N.Y. (WENY) -- Nimbus the emu has been on the run in Pine City area since July 30th. He escaped from his enclosure in the early morning, and the search has been on for him ever since.

There are four emus at Stellar Gamebirds, Poultry, and Waterfowl in Pine City. Nimbus is the largest emu, weighing about forty-five pounds and standing at four feet tall.

“[Emus are] a fascinating bird overall.  They're foragers, they like insects as well. That's the problem with Nimbus, right now, with [the environment] being so heavily wetted and green, he could live off our land for so long, which is why he's still running,” said Katie Darrow, Nimbus’s owner.

Darrow thinks Nimbus is close to home. There have been a couple Nimbus sightings since the emu went missing. He was last seen on Dutch Hill Road in Pine City Monday morning, but ran off before he was able to be caught.

"He came from a very stressful situation, he is leery of people and surroundings, so it's best to watch from afar and let us know if anybody sees him,” added Darrow.

Emus can run at speeds upwards of twenty-five miles per hour. Darrow says to be cautious of Nimbus's talons, as they are very sharp. An officer from the Southern Tier Animal Control has instructions if you see Nimbus out in the wild.

“If you do see the emu, don't approach it. Make sure you call the non-emergency 911 number, and they will dispatch an animal control officer,” said Joel Pearson, an animal control officer for Southern Tier Animal Control.

Darrow says she is hopeful that Nimbus will be returned home soon, and there is a cash reward being offered for information leading to his safe return.
