Community joins search for missing Westfield woman
WESTFIELD, Pa (WENY) -- WENY News is continuing to follow the report of a missing elderly woman from Tioga County, Pennsylvania, who went missing on July 20th. Over 50 community volunteers gathered at the Westfield Municipal Building on Thursday morning to begin their search for 84-year-old Phyllis Potter.
People started looking for Potter just after 8:30 a.m.; the search spanned out into nearby towns surrounding Westfield. A family member said Potter was last seen leaving Missy's Market on July 20th, sometime between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
An online effort on Facebook to find her has been growing, and on Thursday, people came together to search throughout the area, hoping to find any clues as to where Potter went.
"We're going to keep searching every day until she's found," said Mariah Barker, a volunteer.
Barker was one of many volunteers who helped look for Potter. Barker said she met the woman a few times previously, and works with her daughter-in-law. She said she wanted to help the family the best she could.
"Honestly, it's just a really sad situation that she's missing. You never want to hear about an elderly (person) that's gone missing. Plus, the fact that I do know her daughter-in-law," said Barker.
Volunteers searched for Potter all day, using their vehicles, ATVs, and even going door to door on foot. They asked people in the area to check their doorbell cameras, in case they might have caught Potter traveling by.
"We're going to look at vacant lots, vacant houses, knock on people's doors, just kind of go door to door. [We'll look] in fields, culverts, look in anything we possibly can," said Barker.
When people were searching for Potter, organizer Penny Burrell told people to make sure they get out of their vehicles and look along the side of the road for any potential clues, in case Potter got into an accident.
Burrell said if a car goes off the road, it can end up in a ditch, culvert, or pond, and wouldn't be visible from the road.
"We want people to look for signs as if they're hunting in Pennsylvania. You know, look for markings on trees, brush down, gravel torn up, dirt thrashed around and then after that, they can go look for the car," said Burrell.
Burrell doesn't personally know Potter. She created the Facebook group 'The Search for Phyllis Potter' when she learned a local woman was missing, she wanted to do something to help the family.
"I'm not here because I want gratification or anything from anyone. I want to help the family and find their mother, or mother-in-law, or Grandmother Phyllis," said Burrell. "I plan on being here every day until she's found. I'm hoping she's found today, so we don't have to continue, that's my hope and prayers."
Burrell said if Potter wasn't found on Thursday, that her and other volunteers would be searching for Potter again tomorrow, July 28th. Volunteers can meet at the Westfield Municipal Building at 8 a.m.
Potter might have been driving a 2009 white Subaru Outback with Pennsylvania plates DKL1425.
Potter is 5' 2", about 150 pounds, with gray hair, blue eyes, and glasses.
Anyone who might have information on Potter's whereabouts should contact the Pennsylvania State Police Barracks in Mansfield at (570)-662-2151. People can also call 9-1-1, even if they don't have service.
People helping with the search are reminded not to touch anything that could be a clue or evidence of Potter's disappearance.
