Picking up the pieces after the ReStore fire in Corning
CORNING, NY (WENY) -- Flames overtook the Steuben County Habitat for Humanity ReStore on July 20th. Habitat for Humanity now needs the community's help to get back on its feet.
“It supports local families in the Steuben county area with not only building shelter, but a sense of community. Its not just our store or a place where we work, it's a place where we work out of to support the surrounding area and all the families involved,” said Steve Daniels, executive director for the Steuben County Habitat for Humanity.
As the result of the fire, the roof caved in, all of the inventory inside was destroyed, and the building is unusable for the near future. The profits from this store went directly to building and furnishing houses for those in need. Habitat for Humanity leaders say the support from the public after the fire has been overwhelming.
“We're an organization that believes in building homes, community, and hope. it's wonderful that the community is now helping us with that hope that we can get up and running as soon as possible,” said Joy Overacker, community outreach and resource development director for the Steuben County Habitat for Humanity.
Even though the ReStore is closed until further notice, the Steuben County Habitat for Humanity is still working to serve the community. Daniels says that both donations and volunteer support are needed to get the ReStore back in business.
“It just feels really great to know that we're supported by the local community and everyone is rallying behind us. We really want to get this back up and running not just only for us, but for everybody in the community,” added Daniels
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but firefighters believe the flames sparked from a donated item. It is up in the air if the ReStore building can be salvaged for future use.
