Ernie Davis game worn jersey up for grabs at 2023 Lelands Summer Classic Auction

(WENY) -- Every year, sports enthusiasts and collectors gear up for the Lelands Summer Classic Auction. In 2023, people could bid on a piece of Syracuse University football history; a jersey worn in-game by the late Ernie Davis.
The road jersey is said to be from when Davis played for Syracuse University back in 1960, before becoming the first black Heisman Trophy winner in 1961. Resolution photomatching shows the jersey is from a game Davis played in on October 1st, 1960, against Kansas University at Memorial Stadium.
Davis led Syracuse to a National Championship in the season prior (1959) and was an All-American in 1960 and 1961. During the 1960 season, Davis averaged 7.8 yards per carry, and was the third leading rusher in the country with 877 yards.
Initially, the jersey was put up for auction starting at $5,000. While the current bid stands at over $8,000, people can bid on the jersey online until August 5th, 2023.
