Corning Sticker Shop Hit by State Crackdown on Illicit Marijuana Sales
CORNING, NY (WENY) -- A marijuana sticker shop on Market Street in Corning has been ordered to stop selling unlicensed marijuana, after an inspection by the state Office of Cannabis Management.
Mosa's on Market now has state placards on its front door and windows, notifying that illicit cannabis was seized from the location, and the business is ordered to immediately stop selling the products.
The seizure by the state is the latest in a crackdown effort on businesses that are not licensed to sell cannabis. Earlier this year, New York State signed into law legislation to close a loophole used by unlicensed dispensaries. Known as "sticker shops", the stores sell items like stickers or other non-cannabis products, then "gift" the buyer marijuana with their purchase.
Stores that continue to violate state law face fines up to $20,000 for the most egregious violation. The state law also makes it a crime to sell cannabis without a license.
Officials with the Office of Cannabis Management and Department of Taxation and Finance are now conducting regulatory inspections of businesses selling marijuana, to determine if appropriate taxes are being paid.
Last month, the OCM and DTF inspected and seized unlicensed cannabis from three stores in downtown Ithaca.
