ELMIRA, NY (WENY) -- The Elmira Fire Department said it is concerned about the rising number of fires in the city and beyond, linked to lithium-ion batteries.

On May 4th, the fire department responded to a house fire caused by an e-bike battery that caught fire while charging overnight. The resident had to jump from a second story window, because the fire started near the front door of the apartment, where the e-bike was charging.

Fire Chief Andrew Mallow said when lithium-ion batteries overheat and catch fire, they burn so fast and hot it's unlikely a resident can put them out themselves. He says people should take care to not charge these types of devices, like e-bikes, near exit paths, like a entryway or front porch, because it can block an escape route and make it hard to get out in a short amount of time.

The Elmira Fire Department is offering the following safety tips, when it comes to charging or storing lithium-ion batteries.

• Research any product before you purchase it. Check the reliability and safety ratings for the product before you commit to a purchase.
• Discontinue use of any rechargeable battery that has been damaged and always check the condition of your battery after a crash or drop.
• Charge batteries as far away from exit paths and structures as possible, preferably an outdoor area, and only use the charging equipment that came with the battery.
• Always look for statements that the equipment has passed safety inspections and complies with safety standards.
• If replacement batteries or charging equipment are needed, buy the same model from the manufacturer, not a “generic” replacement.
• Charge the battery when you’re in close proximity so you can keep an eye on the charging progress. Unplug the charger as soon as the battery is fully charged.

Mallow also recommends having conversation with children about the correct use of these types of devices, and to make sure they are stored in safe areas, following the manufacturer's directions.
