BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Johnson City Central School District middle school principal who was charged with trying to rape a 16-year-old girl was bailed out of Broome County Jail by his wife. That's according to officials from the Broome County Court, who say 55-year-old Daniel Erickson is now free on $5,000 bail.

As part of his bail, Erickson will enter into a pre-trial release program that requires he wear an ankle monitor and be confined to his house. Erickson was initially charged with luring a child, and attempted rape.

The Johnson City School district confirmed to WENY News that Erickson has been suspended and is not allowed on school grounds.

According to police Erickson was communicating with a 16-year-old female student over Snapchat while posing as a young adult. Police say he used his position as a school principal to access a school district database information to help connect with the alleged victim.

Police say an investigation revealed that Erickson made statements and actions that indicated he was going to engage in sexual conduct with the teen and that Erickson had agreed to meet with the student in a remote location. That's where police say detectives were waiting, taking Erickson into custody on July 7th.

The Broome County Sheriff's Office said the communication between Erickson and the minor had been going on for at least a week, and Erickson tried to meet with the teen multiple times. He allegedly went to her home, but she did not come out to meet him.
