Credit card skimming device found in Painted Post area Walmart, tips on how to protect yourself
PAINTED POST, N.Y. (WENY) -- A credit card skimming device was discovered in the Walmart in Erwin, Steuben County and police are asking for help finding the people they believe installed it. The device was found by employees and removed, and the situation is now being investigated by New York State Police.
The device was designed to fit over the existing credit card scanner, so it can scan and steal account information from unsuspecting customers. State Police say there are three suspects in this case, pictured above.
According to police the trio entered the Walmart on July 3rd and installed the device. After further investigation, police say it was determined that the individuals are suspected of similar crimes throughout the Southern Tier and Central New York areas.
It is recommended for shoppers to check for any inconsistencies with the equipment when swiping their cards. Indications of tampering may include loose-fitting covers, misaligned card readers, or an over-sized appearance.
Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact the New York State Police at 607-962-3282.
TIPS TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM SKIMMING AT ATMs/STORES:
- Be sure to inspect the ATM and look for anything that's loose, crooked, damaged or scratched.
- Pull at the edges of the keypad before putting in your PIN and cover the keypad when you enter your PIN.
- Try to use ATMs in a well-lit, indoor location.
- Check for anything protruding near the spot where you swipe or insert your card.
- Check your bank statements regularly.
TIPS TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM SKIMMING AT THE GAS PUMP:
- When you're at the gas pump, fuel pump skimmers are usually attached inside the machine and aren't visible.
- If possible, choose a fuel pump closer to the store and in the direct view of the attendant.
- You can also run your debit card as credit, to avoid putting in your PIN. If that's not an option, be sure to cover up the keypad, or pay inside instead of at the pump.
- Check your bank statements regularly.
If your credit or debit card information is hacked, contact your local bank.
