'Launch of the Lakes' kicks off the Finger Lakes Wine Festival
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (WENY) -- A toga party, wine, and live music are what you could find at the 'Launch of the Lakes', which is the start of the Finger Lakes Wine Festival. Dozens, if not over 100 people headed to WGI to sip on wine and have a good time.
"It's a great two-day event coming up tomorrow and Sunday," said Director of NASCAR Corporate Sales, Rob Roessel. "It’s about celebrating the great wines we love as a region, and bringing our core fans together."
Plenty of Wine Festival go-ers dressed up in costumes, and others dressed like Greek Gods and Goddesses.
Wine Festival attendee Karl Turner said he's been coming to the Finger Lakes Wine Fest for almost 20 years. He said it started with him and his wife going, and then his kids joined them once they were old enough. But the Turners don't just attend the event in regular clothes, they tend to go in costume.
"We’ve wanted to do a theme, but because life is so hectic, we just keep wearing the same outfits that we’re wearing now," said Turner.
Elizabeth Stamp is a Manager at Lakewood Vineyards. Lots of people lined up at Lakewood's tent to sample its wines and even bought bottles. Stamp said an event like this is great for the business.
"It’s great exposure because the reach that Watkins Glen International has and the people they can connect with and bring to the region and learn about our wine is tremendous," said Stamp. "We love the opportunity, and we love how the community supports the festival."
More food trucks, wineries, and vineyards will be present at WGI on Saturday and Sunday.
Weather permitting, Roessel said there will be pace car rides from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days, and it'll be $10 per person.
