(WENY) -- As WENY News first reported in June, the Brand Park Memorial Pool in Elmira will be demolished and turned into a splash pad. One local man documented the pool's history and others just like it across the country.

Videographer Caleb Madl has been working on a documentary about abandoned pools for several months. Madl said he was only going to do a video on Brand Park Memorial Pool in Elmira until he did a little bit of research.

"I realized the ever-expanding network of Wesley Bintz swimming pools... and so I was like I think I need to visit more than just this one," said Madl.

Madl said he wanted to explore the history of the pool in an entertaining way. He said focusing on some of the Wesley Bintz pools was a cool experience, especially the Brand Park Memorial Pool.

Madl said he had friends and family who swam there but he wasn't able to.

"By the time I was old enough to make my own decisions, it was closed," said Madl. He added, "I didn't get to experience it or swim in it, [but] I wanted to make sure that I not only had the facts...but also the feelings that people had towards it."

Madl visited five of Wesley Bintz's pools in several states and learned the stories behind them. He said the process of making his documentary was long but he enjoyed it. Madl said while he made the video for his YouTube channel, it was also a documentary for Brand Park Memorial Pool and a way to remember what it used to be.

"When I say documentary, I think that can kind of like throw people off a little bit because documentaries [can be] very monotone and just factual," said Madl. He added, "This video is factually based, but I want people to feel something. Whether they reminisce about Brand Park Memorial Pool, or sad for the pool in West Virginia that got torn down, or sad [for when] the Brand Park Memorial Pool [will] get torn down.
