Skateboard the Summer days away
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Skateboarders in the Southern Tier, participated in a competition on Sunday, July 2nd, for all levels of skaters. Eldridge's Skateboard Park invited skateboarders to enjoy the Summer fun, even with the gray clouds.
"We're here, we were at Brandt Park last year, but we're at Eldridge Park this year," shared the owner of 3AMNewYork, Savon Hinton. "We figured it'll have a little bit more obstacles and it'll be a little bit more dynamic for the skaters."
Even though the weather was not ideal after the rain Saturday night, the event had a great crowd. One skater, Mason Vanderhoff began skating three months ago because Savon inspired him.
Mason Vanderhoff is new to the sport he said, "I just learned board slides, but not here. I like to manual that Hubble box and I'm trying to 180 the from the hubba the, pump thing to the quarter."
As an avid and talented biker, Mason chooses to take his summer break to try skateboarding. Following 90 days of practice, he is doing more tricks than our 10 fingers can count.
"I really like that it's a really diverse group. We've got some guys that have been skating for years, and then we've got some kids that are just now coming up, you know, so you'll see some people with no helmets. You'll see some kids with pads and, and helmets on," Hinton added.
Before the rain returned to Elmira, Mason dropped his board on the ramp and began performing his new found talent. His performance had lots of rounds of applause and loud cheers from the sidelines.
"Skating and how rapidly it's, it's growing. I, it's crazy to me how, you know, it seems like they're getting younger and younger and really able to just do such crazy tricks nowadays. And these skaters, they're, they're jumping off stuff and you know, they're just daredevils at such a young age now." Hinton mentioned.
Mason brought home the gold for first place. His prize was a brand new 3AMNEWORK board. His accomplishment proves anything is possible when you set your mind to the prize.
While the weather was not perfect, Hinton shared to keep your eyes and ears open because the next competition will be announced by the end of July.
