Southport residents concerned over trailer park conditions
SOUTHPORT, N.Y. (WENY) -- About a half dozen people including neighbors of Cherry Lane Park on Sherman Avenue, spoke at the Southport Town Board meeting Tuesday night to address their concerns about the condition of the mobile home park.
"A tenant recently moved out and he told me that the mobile home was infested with mice and cockroaches. I haven't seen an exterminator over there doing anything," said one concerned Southport resident.
Another neighbor referenced a trailer that had caught fire and said there weren't any smoke or carbon monoxide detectors in the home.
"What about the violations in the trailers? Where were the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors when the four little children were in the trailer and there was a gas leak?" said one woman.
Those who spoke up about the park said they're concerned for the safety of the residents there and say the property owner, management, and attorneys all live out of town.
"There's supposed to be management in that office. I haven't seen one manager in there and that was supposed to be as of June first," said the same woman who mentioned the lack of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
At the end of the meeting, Southport Town Supervisor Joe Roman believed discussions surrounding Cherry Lane Park should continue.
No action was taken by the board regarding the mobile home park on Tuesday night.
An attorney for the property owner said there are currently 11 homes that are occupied, and there are plans to remove the existing homes and replace them with new trailers that will be sold to residents.
WENY News is working to learn more about the property and about concerns regarding the safety and well-being of people who live there.
