A bill returns to allow supermarket wine licenses
ALBANY, NY (WENY)-- Forty states in the nation allow wine sales in supermarkets. But in New York it's against the law.
Some New York State lawmakers want to change this.
“I’ve been supportive of wine in grocery stores for many years. I think it’s about giving our wineries and businesses the opportunity to compete and expand their marketplace,” said Assembly Member Phil Palmesano (R-Corning).
Palmesano added this bill could strengthen wineries economic impact on the state.
Some liquor stores said they are concerned this legislation could hurt their business.
“It’s our livelihood, my father started this business back in the 70’s,” said Stefan Kalogridis, Owner of Colvin Wine Merchants. “Over two thousand stores If you look at me right now, I’m anchored next to a supermarket. They will compete with me and eventually I will close down."
Some supermarkets support this legislation.
Wegmans stated in an email to WENY News this legislation will provide convenience to New York consumers.
Kalogridis disagrees. He said supermarkets are most often close to a liquor store.
The bill is currently still in committee. Some New York State lawmakers said they do not see this bill going through before the end of session.
“I don’t think we’re close to doing wine in grocery stores,” said Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D-Assembly District 83).
