Two student athletes honored with top awards

(WENY) -- The Gary Forbes Memorial Award and the Valley Principals Award were given to one male and one female high school athlete on Sunday morning. Each year, the Principals from Waverly, Sayre, and Athens high schools meet to determine the winner of the Gary Forbes Award for the best male athlete and the Valley Principals Award for the best female athlete.
For a male athlete to be nominated for the Gary Forbes Memorial Award; the athlete must be a senior, letter in three sports, and have outstanding sportsmanship and citizenship.
For a female athlete to be nominated for the Valley Principals Award; the athlete must be a senior, letter in three sports, and have outstanding sportsmanship and citizenship.
The Gary Forbes Award recipient was Mason Lister from Athens. In Lister's high school career, he threw for 5,555 yards and became the all-time passing and touchdown leader at Athens.
He plans to play D3 football at Saint John Fisher College and pursue a degree in sports management.
The Valley Principals Award recipient was Kennedy Westbrook from Waverly.
Westbrook played four years on the girls varsity soccer team and was named the IAC Large South Division MVP in 2022. She scored 17 goals and eight assists in her final season of soccer and ended her career with 50 goals and 29 assists.
Westbrook recently signed to play D1 soccer at New Jersey Institute of Technology.
The other nominees and their plans after high school are as follows:
Emma Bronson will Run Cross Country and Track at D-1 Bucknell majoring in Chemistry.
Jackson Hubbard will play Baseball at Monroe Community College and major in physical education with plans to transfer to a D1 school after completing his first two years.
Ty Beeman will play Baseball at D-2 Mansfield where he will compete for a starting catcher position. He will major in Special Education and wants to teach and coach.
