Tommy Hilfiger may not be the only big fashion icon from Elmira. 23-year-old Joshua Stroman, another son of the soil, is ready to break down barriers in the fashion industry. Stroman attended both Elmira High School and Morrisville State University, where he found his passion for fashion. He is proud of his online fashion line called Saucy Streetwear.

'' Saucy Streetwear started as a skateboard brand. We have kind of kept that theme throughout. We are focusing on the coolest thing you have ever seen. We want our color to be very popping and very loud. This brand was made for the younger crowd. We live in a society that forces us to look a certain way and wear certain clothes. Saucy Streetwear was created so that young people can be their authentic self, ''said Joshua Stroman.

Joshua reminisced on the hard times growing up in Elmira back in the 2000s. Poverty, dilapidated buildings, crime and neglect evidently occurred throughout the city. It was very difficult to see the city that he lived in be in a state of despair. Though the city has somewhat rebounded since then, it still has a long way to go. Joshua's biggest goal is to become the next Elmira fashion icon, so that he can contribute to the economic growth of Elmira.

'' I want my headquarters, my main offices, and my main industry right here in Elmira. I feel like it is underrepresented. There are many people that want to work here. There are many people that can create, design and do all the things these NYC brands can do,'' said Stroman.

Joshua is a very community-driven individual. He has been involved in many community events in the area like fashion shows. These events have not only helped to showcase his talent, but also highlight the pride he has for his home area. However, the journey does not end there. He plans to get more involved in community events like GlassFest and Cinco De Mayo.

If you are a young creative, Joshua's advice is to be your authentic self.

'' You need to show them who you are, what you represent and at the end of the day, be yourself. If you can create as much as you can for yourself, then that's just another step forward you don't have to give anybody else, ''Joshua said.

As a young creative of color, Stroman faced some challenges. He didn't let that stop him from perusing his dream. You can find Joshua Stroman's collection of clothing by following Saucy Streetwear on Instagram or visiting the website.
