PA man sentenced for Elmira kidnapping and murder
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- One of the men accused of torturing a man in Elmira before leaving him to die in a Pennsylvania field has pleaded guilty on Friday, May 5th. Malik Weems of Pittsburgh, PA now faces 18 years to life for the murder charge and 15 years to life for kidnapping.
Weems is one of the men who helped two other people torture and kill 38-year-old Juan Jose Gotay from New York City. Gotay was brutally tortured at a home in Elmira and then left to die in a Pennsylvania field.
The sentences will run concurrently. Weems will be officially handed down his sentence on July 14th.
Along with Weems, Eddie Marte was also expected to be in court today but had his case adjourned for at least a couple of months. Marte and Weems have been at the Ontario County Jail since April of this year, according to jail records.
