HORNELL, N.Y. (WENY) - The Hornell Steamers are set to begin their 2023 season in just over a month, and the team will enter this summer with a new coach.

The Steamers announced on Monday night that Curtis Shultz will lead the team in 2023.

Shultz pitched for Cazenovia College for four years where he appeared in 19 games out of the bullpen.

Schultz's coaching experience includes being an assistant coach with the Interstate Collegiate Baseball League with Diamon Pro in the summer of 2021. He was the pitching coach and Athlete Recruiting Coordinator at Cazenovia during the 2021-22 season. Then, he was an assistant coach with the Geneva Red Wings in the PGCBL last season. Schultz is also a pitching instructor at Diamond Pro Baseball in Rochester, and he assists at Keuka College.

The team released a statement from General Manager Paul Welker saying "I have been really impressed with Curtis from day one. He was recommended by former Dodger manager Tony Fuller and former player Jake Marinelli. I expect the 2023 team to work hard and bring excitement to Maple City Park."

The Steamers finished last year 24-17-1 overall and in second place in the NYCBL Western Division. They are scheduled to open the 2023 season on Friday, June 5th when they travel to Horseheads to face the Hitmen.

Hornell's home opener at Maple City Park is scheduled for Saturday, June 10th.
