New York budget now 27 days late
ALBANY, NY (WENY)--New York's state budget reaches it's fourth week of overtime making it one of the latest state budgets in a decade. The last significantly late budget was in 2010.
Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a press conference earlier this week they are nearing a final budget deal.
“I don’t think New Yorker’s or anybody outside this room will be focused on the length of time, but they’ll be looking at the quality of my blueprint for leading the state forward,” she said.
Once the Governor and lawmakers reach a deal, the state constitution requires budget bills to age three days before being voted on. But the Governor can issue messages of necessity--which allow her to circumvent this three-day age rule for any legislation including budget bills.
Some Republican lawmakers are concerned about this.
“A couple days extra for New Yorkers to be able to review this budget, for us to be able to adequately review it and evaluate it. We’re requesting that no messages of necessity be utilized this year on the budget,” said Sen. Tom O’Mara (R-Big Flats).
