The Empire Royals Cheerleaders prepare for a major competition
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Empire Royals Cheerleading teams are off to the Superbowl of cheerleading. This Southern Tier team has been around for less than three years, and they are ready to go.
“We are leaving for Florida for the one final and we are really excited because our gym hasn't been there yet,” said Junior Empire Royal, Charlie Bourgeois.
The global finals, called ’The One,’ will take place in the Sunshine state. It is unclear how many teams will be present, and no one is guaranteed to make it past day one. This is a team sport.
“That is hard to say honestly, there will be a couple hundred teams. Some are decided if they stay day one or go home day two. So, it is a very competitive program,” said Gym Manager, Antonio Sanchez.
Empire Royals Junior team is comprised of eight to 16-year-old girls. All of the Cheerleaders rely on each other to have a successful routine. Sunday’s practice had a lot of hands-on deck and all the girls were ready to show their talent.
“The routine that you will be seeing today is level, junior, level two team. There is a lot of sweat and tears that went into this routine to make it what it is today,” shared Gabrelle Owsu, cheerleader.
All of the girls practiced hard today and they look forwards to the big day on stage, later this month.
“We are a family and no matter what happens we will stick together. Win or lose we will always be there for each other,” added Owusu.
The Empire Royals will be holding a car wash on Saturday, April 22nd. Meet the teams to get your car cleaned and grab some sweet treats at 130 Gardner Road, Horseheads. The cheer team will be there from 12 to 4 PM and the wash costs $10 dollars.
