ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- First responders faced-off at First Arena Saturday evening in the 'Battle of the Badges.' The Elmira Police Department (EPD) played against the Elmira Fire Department, and all of the proceeds went toward good causes.

"We had a little hiatus with COVID going on, so last year was our first year (back) since COVID. This is my second year, it’s been awesome so far. It’s a very cool experience. It's like being a professional for a day. So you know, we take full advantage of that," said Bailey Bourgeois, a defensive player and fire fighter for the Elmira Fire Department.

Dozens of people came out to support local law enforcement and fire fighters in the 'Battle of the Badges.' While community members could enjoy a free game of hockey, they could also donate to a good cause. All of the money that was raised was donated to two charities. "I know we’re going to donate to the Elmira Animal Shelter," said Bourgeois.

Conor Everett is a deputy sheriff with the Chemung County Sheriff's Office. He said his team is donating to the Arnot Ogden Medical Center's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). "We like to have charities that keep the money local, and that’s one that most people and their families have some ties to the NICU," said Everett.

While EPD lost six to four, the team has something to be proud of. Everett said this is the first year the team almost had a full representation of local law enforcement. "It’s nice to see that so many other guys get interested in it and come out and have a blast," said Everett.

Both Bourgeois and Everett hope the 'Battle of the Badges' continues to grow with time. They said it was amazing to see all of the community support, and they wanted to thank everyone who donated their time and/or money for the event.

In total, the 'Battle of the Badges' raised nearly $2,100. Both EPD and the Elmira Fire Department are working together to schedule its Guns & Hoses baseball/softball game.
