Diaper and menstrual product giveaways happening in the Southern Tier
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- SNAP's emergency allotments expired in February, putting a burden on families who rely on the benefits. Hoping to ease some stress, the Junior League of Greater Elmira-Corning invites anyone needing assistance with diapers or menstrual products to drop by one of their two giveaways in Spring 2023 while encouraging anyone who can to leave donations.
“The last one was very successful,” Corey Tremaine, President of the Junior League, said, adding, “We only came home with four bags of diapers left. We gave out over 1,000 menstrual products and 100 packages of diapers to our area.”
The first giveaway is happening on March 13th at the Grace Episcopal Church in Elmira from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The second will be held on May 20th at Seven Mountains Media in Elmira.
The organization will be giving away diapers and menstrual products on a first-come, first-serve basis.
“We’re always looking for donations,” Tremaine said, adding, “The need is there.”
Organizers say they anticipate even more need as pandemic-era SNAP benefits have now come to an end. They say the benefits expiring leaves recipients with even less money for these needed personal care items.
“SNAP benefits cover menstrual products, but now with those expiring, people (might have) to choose,” Tremaine said, adding, “There's more of a choice that they're going to have; either food, diapers, or menstrual products. We are only going to see the need go up with this.”
People can drop off diapers and menstrual products at the following locations:
- Horseheads Jubilee Foods, 2898 Westinghouse Rd., Horseheads, NY 14845
- Minier’s, 84 Canal Street, Big Flats, NY 14814
- InfusIVe IV Hydration & Wellness, 2033 College Avenue, Elmira, NY (March only). Anyone bringing in a donation is also eligible to receive a free B12 injection.
- Talbots, 3343 Chamber Rd. South, Horseheads, NY 14845 (between March 6th and 19th)
