ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Chemung County Sheriff's Office had a promotional pinning ceremony for five employees in Elmira, Thursday afternoon.

“You have to have the characteristics of a good leadership...a person to take over those roles,” Chemung County Sheriff William Schrom. “Each one of these gentlemen possess those skills and we're very proud of all of them...to congratulate them on their accomplishment.”

Sheriff Schrom said the pinning ceremony is a way to recognize the efforts of Chemung County police officers. He explained, the officers have to establish themselves as a deputy sheriff, pass several written tests, and display the characteristics of a leader.

Sheriff Schrom has faith in this new generation of leaders.

“As a Sheriff, you're always proud when anybody in your organization advances,” he said. “You hope they have those opportunities and they take advantage of it...and once it happens, you can see...by the turnout of their loved ones, how much it means to them as well as the people being promoted. It's a pretty cool thing.”

Thomas Argetsinger was promoted to Captain. He will be in charge of overseeing the entire Road Patrol. Argetsinger said he is ready to take on the responsibilities of being third in command.

“We do the best we can with the public's help...just do our best,” he said. “That's all we can do.”

Sheriff Schrom said he is proud of this group of men and he hopes they continue to make Chemung County a safer place, every day.
