Water bill battle between Watkins Glen and Town of Dix
VILLAGE OF WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (WENY) -- There is a battle about water usage going on between the Village of Watkins Glen and the Town of Dix. Dix residents get their water from Watkins Glen. As of August of 2022, they believe there are major discrepancies about the water usage being billed to the town, and that reflected on individual meters.
Watkins Glen Town Clerk, Fred Warrick, has been working closely with the Village to get these issues resolved with Dix.
“We noticed that they weren't paying their bill...either in full or at all,” he said. “We had to address the problem with them and they came back and it was just kind of, like, minor conversations about...'Well, this doesn't feel right,' or 'This doesn't seem right,' and it just kind of dragged out from there.”
Warrick said, the Village's attorney issued a letter to Dix in December, regarding a break of the water agreement. Since then, there has been a lot of miscommunications on this issue, Warrick claimed.
“'Hey, you're getting awfully behind on your bills,' to the point where we're talking about hundreds of thousands of dollars...and that's when they came forward and said, 'Okay, we have these problems,’” he said. “We've been working with them...slowly...to try to determine what the issues are but the communication hasn't been very good.”
Now, Dix owes Watkins Glen a little over $400,000. Watkins Glen's Deputy Mayor, Louis Perazzini, said Diz has claimed that there are billing and administrative deviations from the terms of the water supply agreement.
“Both of our attorneys are getting together after this...and again, we know there are issues in the system,” he said. “Between the Town and the Village, we're going to try to work on getting these...whether they're leaks or...older style meters.”
Dix has agreed to make a large payment to the Village by Monday.
WENY reached out to multiple officials from Dix and has received no response at this time.
