HORNELL, N.Y. (WENY)--A Hornell man has been arrested on Friday for Child abuse following a joint investigation with the Steuben County Department of Social Services Child Protective Unit. 

Hornell police say 25-year-old Robert E Taft of 38 Sherman Street in Hornell was arrested following the complaint of suspected child abuse of a child under five years old.

The complaint was reported by the Emergency Department at St. James Hospital after the child was taken there in the early morning of October 23rd.

Taft has been charged with two counts of assault in the first degree, two counts of reckless endangerment in the first degree, two counts of reckless assault of a child, and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. 

It is also alleged September through October Taft shook a child under five years old in a separate incident and caused a brain injury to that child. Taft was taken to the Steuben County jail without bail pending further arraignment in Hornell City Court.
