WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (WENY) -- Hundreds of people came up to Watkins Glen this Saturday for the Walk to End Alzheimer's. In raising money and awareness people came out to walk around the Watkins Glen International Race Track.

The annual fundraiser, held in over 600 communities nationwide, is the largest fundraiser for Alzheimer's care, support, and research. On Saturday, 216 participants across 50 teams raised over $75,000 for the Alzheimer's Association. This was the second year the Walk was brought to Watkins Glen International.

“Last year, we moved it to the Glen because it got too big,” Teresa Galbier, Executive Director for the Alzheimer’s Association Rochester & Finger Lakes Chapter, said. “We moved it from Elmira to a location that could handle more people, raise new visibility, and bring in folks from the other parts of our community.”

The Hilliard Cooperation was one elite sponsor at the Walk. Jan Van Den Blink, the President of Hilliard, lost his mother to Alzheimer's and was compelled to walk alongside others. He says the support generated from the event helps those with the disease and their families who take care of them.

“It affects the person with it but tremendously impacts the families that have to take care of folks with Alzheimer's and Dementia,” Van Den Blink said. “Anyway to help them with programs, support groups, and things like that is a great help.”

People that couldn't make the Walk this year can also send donations to the Alzheimer's Association online.
