WAVERLY, N.Y. (WENY) - Waverly football is having a stellar season, sitting at 6-0 and ranked 5th in the state in Class C, but the Wolverines will face their toughest test yet on Friday when they host second-ranked and defending state champ Chenango Forks.

The Wolverines fell to the Blue Devils in last year's Section IV Championship game. This year, the teams have played similarly to this point. Waverly is averaging 39 points per game while giving up just over 13 points per game. Chenango Forks is 5-1, with their only loss coming to the top-ranked team in Class B Maine-Endwell on September 23rd. The Blue Devils are averaging 31 points per game and the defense has also allowed a little over 13 points per game.

Waverly Head Coach, Jason Miller says they just need to continue to play the way they've been playing and execute well, but the team knows the challenge that awaits them on Friday.

"It's amazing how they look eerily similar every single year," said Miller. "They're big up front, they run the ball very well, they're very well-coached on defense and on offense, but they're smothering on defense. They're very sound in their techniques, they don't get out of position, and they're just a typical Forks team."

"For us to win a game like this, we have to get off the field in three downs. If we allow them to churn out first down after first down and allow them to have four plays to get a first down it's going to be a difficult task so field position is going to be very important" he added.

"We're really preparing mentally for this game," said senior center and linebacker Ty Beeman. "We lost last year in the Section Finals to these guys, they're a really good team. We've been working really hard, trying to make sure all of our imperfections are coming together. Everybody's got to be on the same page and mindsets have to be right and hopefully, we'll go from there."

Friday's kickoff at Waverly Memorial Stadium is scheduled for 7 PM.
