HORSEHEADS, NY (WENY) -- As part of Fire Prevention Week, the Horseheads Fire Department will host its annual open house on Friday, October 14th.

2022 marks the 100th observance of Fire Prevention Week, which commemorates the date of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The fire killed more than 250 people, and left more than 100,000 homeless.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, today's homes burn faster than ever. Your ability to detect a fire faster and escape safely depends on working smoke alarms and a plan. The NFPA recommends having smoke and carbon monoxide detectors inside every bedroom, and on every level of your home. Know at least two ways out of every room, and have an agreed upon meeting place a safe distance from your home. Be sure to practice your home fire drill at least twice a year, once during the day and once at night.

The Horseheads Fire Department also recommends making sure that your plan meets the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities, and make sure all doors and windows open easily.

Friday's open house will be held at the fire house at 134 North Main Street from 5:30 to 7:30PM. There will be a meet and greet with firefighters, police officers, paramedics and emergency medical technicians. There will be a live burn demonstration, fire hose target practice, a bounce house, hot dogs and cookies, and more for children and families.
