ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY)-- The City of Elmira goes Purple!  The Elmira Police Department and City hall building illuminate the city in purple to raise domestic violence awareness.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month and purple is the symbolic color to raise awareness about domestic violence.

Catholic Charities of Chemung and Schuyler Counties tells me this year they have assisted 150 victims of domestic violence as of  August 31st.  City Hall and the police department on East Church Street in Elmira will be lit in purple throughout the end of the month of October.

On Monday, Catholic Charities and the Shine a light committee hung purple ribbons on light poles along Church Street in Elmira.

Catholic Charities is hosting two events this month to raise awareness of domestic violence. One will be held on October 20th in Montour Falls and the second event will be held on October 27th in Wisner Park. Both events will be held from 7 pm to 8 pm.
