12th Annual Oktoberfest in Elmira Heights
ELMIRA HEIGHTS, N.Y. (WENY) -- Locals said, "Prost" to Oktoberfest festivities with beer and bratwurst, on 14th Street, in Elmira Heights.
This German-themed celebration is going on its 12th year. People enjoyed local vendors, food and, of course, beer. Rob Cannavino, the owner of Harry's Inn, said the community plans months ahead for this fun event.
“We are celebrating a German holiday and, I guess, a German month,” he said. “So, we have some beer, and brats, and tots, and pretzels, and kind of...spreading some good cheer in a German kind of way.”
Cannavino has owned Harry's Inn for 19 years. Cannavino said people in Elmira Heights look forward to this fun-filled event, every year. After being canceled last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Cannavino said, the community needed the return of Oktoberfest.
“It's just important to celebrate anything that's a positive...deal around here,” he said. “It's been a long, three years and we're desperate for something positive.”
People enjoyed local vendors, live music, a car show, and lots of food. Elmira Heights Events teamed up with local businesses to bring everyone to 14th Street.
Margaret Smith, the Mayor of the Village of Elmira Heights, worked with Elmira Heights Events, this year. Smith said Oktoberfest is a perfect event to host in the fall.
“The leaves are starting to change; people are starting to want to get out for the fresh air,” she said.
Cannavino said his favorite part of Oktoberfest is seeing everyone support local businesses.
"...seeing everyone come out and have a good time,” he said.
