Thousands run in 41st Annual Guthrie Wineglass Marathon
CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) -- Many runners were excited to get to the start line Sunday morning for the 41st Annual Guthrie Wineglass Marathon.
Thousands of runners ran on the 26.2-mile course, starting in Bath and ending in Corning. Runners could also race in the Wegmans Wineglass Half Marathon, which started at the halfway point of the full marathon in Campbell, NY, and ended in Corning. With all COVID restrictions lifted in 2022, runners came from far and wide, traveling from 15 countries and 48 states. With fairly clear skies and temperatures in the 50s, conditions were perfect for race day.
“The whole vibe and excitement is back,” Sheila Sutton, Race Director of the Wineglass Race Series, said. “You can feel it in the runners and volunteers, and everybody seems thrilled to be out here.”
Spencer Friske ran his first full marathon on Sunday, winning the race in dominant fashion. He ran through the course in a brisk 2:17:57, setting a new course record for the marathon by over 2 minutes. He beat the previous record of 2:20:19, set by Tim Chichester in 2017. His record-setting performance helped him surpass the Olympic Trials Qualifying time of 2:18:00.
“I was at 2:17:40 with 100 meters to go and thought I got to go; I'm never going to forgive myself if I don't give it all I have and get under,” Friske said. “Got it by 3 seconds. I'm pretty happy.”
2022 was Lindsay Piraino's second time running the Wineglass Marathon, finishing first for the women. She had a blast setting a new personal record of 2:51:26, meeting her goal of maintaining a pace of 6:30 per mile.
“I enjoyed it more this time around a lot more,” Piraino said. “We got perfect weather conditions, and I was feeling a lot better in the race. It was nice to see all the support.”
