SAYRE, PA (WENY)-- The Sayre School District held a school board meeting Tuesday night. One item that was on the school board agenda was to vote on a proposal sent by the Athens Area school district requesting Sayre pay tuition for 9th-12th grade students to attend Athens starting in the 2024-2025 school year. Also, a request from Athens to enter an Athletic agreement.

One additional item that was also a part of the proposal sent by Athens, is for both school districts to pay for a feasibility study to potentially consolidate the two districts.

Sayre has been seeing a decline in its student population. Due to the decline, they won't have a varsity football team for the 2022 season. Athens requested Sayre enter a co-op of sports with them for the 2024-2025 school year, however, Tuesday the Sayre school board voted no.

As far as the request for Sayre to pay tuition for 9th through 12th-grade students to attend  Athens beginning in 2024, Sayre also voted no.

However, the Sayre School Board did vote yes for both districts to come together and split the costs to conduct a study to potentially consolidate the two districts.

Now in the event, they decide to consolidate both schools based on the findings in the study, the Sayre School Superintendent says both school districts would be dissolved and they would form a new school district.

"We want to collect all the facts for our stakeholders and share that information. After the study is done, then make an informed decision on whether or not we will or will not merge or consolidate I guess. So there's been words, I received a formal request with the word merger, there's also been the word consolidation and so really ultimately if it's going to be the two school districts coming together, it would be the dissolve of the two and a new one being created," Dr. Jill Daloisio, Sayre Area School District Superintendent said.

Dr. Daloisio added she will respond to the Athen's proposal and let them know the Sayre school board voted yes to collectively conduct the study.  Both school boards will come together and select a company to conduct that study.

Once the study is completed it will be presented to both boards and the community.

We will continue to follow this story as it develops.
