ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Honeyduke Confections, a new mom and pop allergen-friendly bakery, has opened in Elmira. The bakery sells homemade baked goods, breakfast items, sweets and more. The co-owners said this is where everything is made from scratch, with love.

“We're more than just a sugar shop,” said co-owner James Dandrea. “We kind of tried to get a little bit of everything on the menu for people, especially the people who are local here. I know they need some breakfast in the morning so we're here to tend for that.”

Dandrea co-owns the bakery with his wife, Caitlin. The bakery is Harry Potter-themed and offers breakfast, bread, cakes, sweets, and drinks.

“Harry Potter has always been a big thing in our lives,” he said. “We decided to just...jump all in and open a bakery. She's a fantastic baker.”

The sweets and treats are not the only thing that is Harry Potter-themed. Dandrea said the name is, as well.

“In the show, the Weasley twins have the candy store and they use that to give out candies that make people sick to get out of class or some weird thing," he said. “So, we kind of just played off that with our own vibes.”

Dandrea said Caitlin has Lupus, an inflammatory disease that limits what she can eat. They started making dairy-free food at home and did not stop there. Dandrea and his wife wanted to open up a bakery that was allergen free and accommodating to everyone in the community.

“We realized that no one really caters to the allergen-friendly crowd out there,” he said. “We're doing full loaves of gluten free bread for people that normally don't get the chance to eat gluten free bread.”

The business is currently open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. They are located at 1849 W Water Street, Elmira. The owners will be celebrating their hard launch on October 1st.
