Mad Hatter Café & Tea Garden Hosts Garden Market
ATHENS, PA (WENY) -- The Mad Hatter Café & Tea Garden hosted the Garden Market this afternoon. Terry Johnston, the owner of the Alice and Wonderland-themed café, wanted to give the community a chance to meet local businesses.
“I love to bring businesses together and community together,” she said. “If you're a small business, it's very hard to get in front of people. The bigger I get, the easier it is to help other people out.”
Johnston wanted to give people an opportunity to shop locally, during the week, if they cannot go to the Waverly Market, on the weekends.
“We have a lot of people saying that they can't make it to the market because they work days and the market is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.,” she said. “We have this space and it's a nice space in the evenings so we started one from 3 to 6 p.m.”
A few local businesses set up shop in Johnston's tea garden, next to her café. The market included live music, a bakery, shopping vendors, and a tarot card reader. Chelsea Burgess is the owner of Align with Chelsea. Burgess said Johnston wanted a tarot card reader at her event.
"Tarot cards...I connect with...I use them as a divination tool to connect to spirits...to help bring messages for those looking," she said. "My favorite is to do, 'What do you need to know most at this time?'”
Burgess said she loves to go to local market events to connect with the community. She urged people to support local businesses.
“You're supporting people,” she said. “You're supporting your local economy, your local people.”
The market will take place from 3 to 6 p.m., every Thursday, until October. The Mad Hatter Café & Tea Garden is located at 400 Main Street in Athens, Pennsylvania.
