ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) - A Professional Box Lacrosse team is coming to Elmira at First Arena as part of the inaugural season for the Professional Box Lacrosse Association starting in December.

The league announced Elmira as one of the 7 teams who will compete this season. The other cities include Binghamton New York, Charlotte North Carolina, Hampton Roads Virginia, New England (Manchester, Springfield), Syracuse New York, and Trenton New Jersey.

President of Mammoth Sports & Entertainment and operator of First Arena, Steve Donner, was named the Commissioner of the PBLA earlier this summer when the PBLA launched. Donner has over 27 years in the industry, including being the Marketing Director for the Buffalo Sabres, and owner of the Rochester Knighthawks of the National Lacrosse League.

"It's so exciting for us as a league and exciting for me personally because I've been involved in lacrosse for many years and working on this project for the last two or three, and what I feel is we are bringing something so exciting to Elmira that until the fans see it, they might believe it. This is one of the most exciting things to happen to this area in quite some time" said Donner.

Donner also discussed the type of competition that will be playing in the PBLA, and the opportunity for local talent.

"This game and this league are built for the American collegiate player, the graduate American collegiate player" he said. "So we're in such a talent-rich area and program area, we'd love to see players graduate from Cornell, play here in the fall, graduate from Syracuse, and play here in the fall. So it's going to be A-list players, world-class players coming to Elmira."

Starting now, fans can nominate a team name at https://pbla.com/vote/ until August 2nd, then the league will select the four best names submitted for each team and fans can vote on the team name they like the most.

"The lacrosse community is a very active culture, and we felt that we wanted our league to be one of the most interactive leagues on the market today. So we thought what not a better way to have the fans pitch in and help us name the team and help us start our brand in our local community" he added.

Donner says that ticket prices will range from $15-$25, with season tickets as low as $99 and top season ticket prices at $160.

He also announced that the league will have its first national player combine in Elmira at First Arena in the third week of August where hundreds of players from across the country will come to Elmira to compete and be tested for fitness. There will be exhibition games open to the public, and from that player pool, the first league draft will be held.

Donner is also bringing FPHL hockey back to First Arena in the fall when the Elmira Mammoth takes the ice in October, and Donner is excited for the carryover from hockey fans to lacrosse fans.
